The ability of businesses and other organisations to maintain continuity of their activities was tested in many ways during the COVID-19 pandemic, and these tests have continued.
Pandemic lockdowns had a major impact in many different ways. Then, value and supply chains were put under a great deal of pressure as demand soared. Then, a cost of living crisis and various economic challenges made business continuity a central piece of resilience. People have created innovative and imaginative solutions to maintain continuity of operations over the past few years, including purposeful assistance to the communities that they serve.
By having a practical Business Continuity Plan (BCP) which is put together and regularly reviewed and tested by a skilled and resilient team, we set ourselves up to be ready to respond to disruption in a purposeful manner, and to focus on what's critical to keep our activities going when disruption occurs (possibly linking up with other resilience activities such as Crisis Management and IT/Cyber management).
As with other aspects of resilience, Business Continuity Management (BCM) works best when it is seamlessly part of people's regular activities, not something that is standalone and only occasionally practised.
