Cities around the world are home to 55 per cent of the world’s population. Given the close proximity with which we live next to each other in cities, it is not surprising that people in these urban environments were hit hardest by COVID-19. It was estimated by the UN in July 2020 in their report, COVID-19 in an urban world, that 90 per cent of all reported cases occurred in urban areas.
This same concentration of people also makes cities the places where the battle for a green recovery from COVID-19 – which is essential to reduce future pandemic risks and respond to climate change – can be won.
